Nicaragua's President Seals His Own Dictatorship The 47th anniversary of the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua was supposed to be a celebration of sorts, marking the ideals that Daniel Ortega helped bring about.

Instead, he used it as a platform to announce what amounts to a coup against democracy: no more elections, a "wall" built against opposition, and a disregard for principles he once claimed to uphold.

This decision is not surprising, given the erosion of democratic norms in Nicaragua under his watch.
