However, this reliance on Moscow makes India vulnerable to Washington’s fresh sanctions that propose 100% tariffs on buyers of Russian oil unless peace is made with Ukraine by September. The economic benefits of ethanol blending are substantial: every incremental increase in blending reduces gasoline imports, lowers crude oil dependency, and generates significant foreign exchange savings. According to Rystad Energy, the mandate to blend 20% ethanol in petrol is estimated to save close to $4 billion annually till 2030.

However, the impact on vehicles has been a major concern, with car owners raising issues about blended fuel damaging their vehicles and lowering mileage. The government’s response to these concerns has been lukewarm: while it denies any adverse impact, several legislators have raised the issue of vehicle compatibility. The auto industry is also hedging its bets across compressed natural gas, hybrids, flex-fuel platforms, and hydrogen for commercial vehicles.
